On 17 May 2019, Lovelyn delivered the Hector Pietersen Memorial Lecture at the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University. This address focused on interrogating the notion of the 'born free' identity and its truthfulness in the current South African landscape. Lovelyn raises the importance of telling new, fuller and more complicated stories about young people in South Africa and their experience of democracy. She further cautions against conflating freedom with democracy in this context.
This lecture is as much a critique as it is a call to allow this generation the opportunity to name themselves; a call to young people to dare to invent their own futures.
